Parting shot: Congrats to Chaz Sheaffer

Earlier this evening, senior Chaz Sheaffer put his name atop the all-time wins list at West Perry High School.

The 189-pounder slid past Central Dauphin East senior Matthew Zdradzinski, 2-1, in the District 3 Class AAA/Southcentral Regional quarterfinals. That victory was career No. 113 for Sheaffer and gave him the record.

Sheaffer hauls a 31-1 record and a Section I title into this morning's semifinals against Dallastown junior Phil Sprenkle (32-3), who won the Section IV title last week. Semifinal action begins at 9 a.m.

In his opening bout Friday, Sheaffer made short work of Elizabethtown senior David Kennedy with a fall in 2:58.

Barn comes to life

Maybe it's a combination of the early start time, the weather or the smaller brackets, but the first session of the District 3 Individual Wrestling Championships always seems rather bland.

We're not talking about the action on the floor but rather the buzz, or lack thereof, in the crowd. We understand that people have day jobs and some view Class AA as an inferior product, but when the afternoon session rolls around, the energy level picks way (you can add a few extra a's in there, if you like) up.

The difference was noticeable right away when Class AAA action kicked off at 3:30 p.m. Dedicated fans were screaming for their favorite wrestler(s) and on more than one occasion, it seemed the entire crowd was following one match. It just feels different as the action moves into the afternoon and evening.

Luckily, the two classes wrestle simultaneously Saturday, which gives the Class AA guys a chance (and a well-deserved one, we might add) to wrestle in front of a large audience.

The List: District 3-AA Wrestling

Below is a glance at the area wrestlers who have survived the first day of the District 3 Class AA Individual Championships at Hersheypark Arena. The top five wrestlers in each weight class advance to next weekend's Southeast Regional at Wilson High School in suburban Reading. Wrestling resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
