Carlisle mentioned in magazine
In the March 28 edition of Sports Illustrated, the Carlisle Indian School is credited with 'perhaps the most significant springtime revelation in college football history.'
The school is mentioned in an article (Rebuild, Recharge, Renew) about spring college football.

Ugly day in Mid-Penn baseball
On a sunny but cold Saturday afternoon, five Mid-Penn Conference baseball teams took to the field in three games.
The combined score: 34-4.
Maybe the most impressive performance didn't come from Northern, which had three pitchers combine on a no-hitter against Camp Hill, but rather Mechanicsburg.
The Wildcats blasted host Boiling Springs, 11-0, in five innings less than 24 hours after the Bubblers opened their season with a 7-6, eight-inning victory over Big Spring. John Thompson struck out five and didn't issue a walk in his five-inning shutout.
Mechanicsburg must be considered a darkhorse in the Keystone Division and we'll know a lot more about the Wildcats when they host defending champion, and division favorite, Lower Dauphin on Monday. (Click here for this week's top games)
Northern, meanwhile, had the combined no-hitter and boasted four players with multiple hits against the Lions in a 10-1 win.
The other Mid-Penn team in action Saturday, Gettysburg, dropped a 13-3, five-inning decision to host Elizabethtown.
A reminder: The Sentinel has a new online stats page for high school baseball. Please check it out for stats, standings and (coming soon) a leaderboard.

Top baseball games: March 28-April 2
Here's a look at the best area baseball games for the first full week of the season. Keep your fingers crossed that Mother Nature cooperates.
Cedar Cliff at Cumberland Valley, Monday -- The defending champions of the Commonwealth Division, coached by Justin Phillips (left) visit the CV Educational Park to open division play. This will also serve as CV's season opener after Friday's postponement against Lower Dauphin.
Lower Dauphin at Mechanicsburg, Monday -- Another reigning division winner comes to the area as Lower Dauphin, which advanced to the PIAA Class AAAA semifinals last June, comes calling to Shirley-Rickenbach Field. Mechanicsburg won the division two years ago and has high hopes to make another run at the title.
Susquenita at Boiling Springs, Wednesday -- Some have tabbed the Blackhawks as the preseason favorite to win the Capital. To do that, a win in Bubbler Country is a must. Boiling Springs started the new year with a nice victory over Big Spring in extra innings. At the time of this post, Susquenita was still waiting to roll off the starting grid.
West Perry at Trinity, Wednesday -- Another fairly big game in the Capital. Each team has a few key pieces to replace, which makes this one intriguing. In what should be a close finish for the division crown, early games like this will matter in May.
Cedar Cliff at Chambersburg -- Huge game for the Colts and their young stable of pitchers. Winning at Greene Township Park is anything but easy. If Cedar Cliff can steal a win in Franklin County, it's has to be taken seriously in its bid to repeat.
Northern at Big Spring, Friday -- A nice test for Brian Robison and his rebuilt Polar Bears. Big Spring lost its opener but the Bulldogs are dangerous. Expect a close battle in a game that will probably been decided on errors.

Wet fields wreak havoc
The first weekend of high school baseball has nearly been wiped out by the recent ugly weather.
There wasn't any rain Friday -- it was sunny and cold -- but there was enough earlier in the week to render many fields unplayable.
With the forecast of more cold weather Saturday, the decision was made to move the Perry County Tournament to its rain date, April 9.
That left two games on the schedule Friday and two more Saturday.
With rain in the forecast for early next week, it might be a few days before the baseball season gets in full swing.

Baseball: This year's stadium games
There's a handful of games that will take place at neutral sites this year. Most of those games will be held at Harrisburg's Metro Bank Park (left), home of the Eastern League's Harrisburg Senators.
Here's a breakdown of each game.
Red Land vs. Cedar Cliff at Metro Bank Park, Harrisburg, April 15, 6 p.m. -- This bitter rivalry returns to City Island one year after being played at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. The teams split last year and both were surprisingly bounced from the District 3-AAAA playoffs early.
Juniata vs. West Perry at Doubleday Farm, Landisburg, April 16, 7 p.m. -- It's not a minor league park, but it's a night game, which is rare in Pennsylvania high school baseball. West Perry had an up-and-down regular season in 2010 before making a run to the District 3-AAA quarterfinals. To crack the district field again, the Mustangs must win games like this.
West Perry vs. Susquenita at Metro Bank Park, Harrisburg, April 29, 6:30 p.m. -- It doesn't get any better than this in Perry County. If the teams meet in the Perry County Tournament final (this Saturday at 1:30 p.m.), this will be the third meeting between the two in a little over a month. It's a healthy rivalry and the Blackhawks have owned it recently. Both teams were in the District 3-AAA quarterfinals last year.
Bishop McDevitt vs. Northern at Metro Bank Park, Harrisburg, April 30, 7 p.m. -- Northern coach Brian Robison used to be the head man at Bishop McDevitt. Since he came to Dillsburg, McDevitt has been a constant on the Polar Bears' non-league schedule. The setting of City Island adds to the intrigue.
Milton Hershey vs. Boiling Springs at Metro Bank Park, Harrisburg, May 2, 7 p.m. -- Bubblers tried to play Trinity on the Island last year but wet grounds moved the game to Dickinson Park. This time around, Boiling Springs has a date with Milton Hershey. Remember, the Bubblers returned to relevance last year by making the District 3-AAA playoffs and need to maintain that momentum.

Baseball: Top non-conference games
Here's a look at the top games of the high school baseball season involving area teams against those from outside the Mid-Penn Conference.
Cumberland Valley at Ephrata, March 31, 4:15 p.m. -- CV has a brutal non-conference schedule and it begins with a trip to the defending Lancaster-Lebanon League champion. No one can ever say coach Mike Whitehead Jr. runs from a challenge.
Big Spring at Bermudian Springs, April 2, 11 a.m. -- The Bulldogs took a major step forward last year by qualifying for the District 3-AAA playoffs. The Eagles? All they did was a win the PIAA Class AA championship last June.
Hempfield at Cumberland Valley, April 2, 1 p.m. -- You remember the Black Knights, right? They were last seen knocking Carlisle out of the 3-AAAA playoffs and upsetting top-seeded and Mid-Penn champion Cedar Cliff three days later.
Cedar Crest at Cumberland Valley, April 9, 11 a.m. -- Another heavy-hitter heading CV's way. The Falcons are the defending District 3-AAAA champions. If there is a tougher non-conference schedule in the state than CV's, we'd love to see it.
Carlisle at West York, April 16, 11 a.m. -- If the rigors of playing in the Commonwealth Division aren't enough, the young Thundering Herd takes to the road for a game against last year's 3-AAA runner-up.
Bermudian Springs at Camp Hill, April 21, 4 p.m. -- Before each team qualified for the PIAA playoffs -- Camp Hill advanced to the Class A quarterfinals; Bermudian won AA gold -- these two duked it out twice in scrimmages last May. This time, the scoreboard at College Park will be turned on.
State College at Cedar Cliff, April 30, 11 a.m. -- In two years, this will be a Commonwealth Division game. For now, it serves a test for Cedar Cliff, which should be in hot pursuit of its second straight division title by this point.
West York at Cedar Cliff, May 7, 11 a.m. -- The Colts are closing against some big-name opponents. After last year's district flame out, is this an attempt to be more prepared for postseason baseball?

Four for 2011
We are exactly one week from the start of the high school baseball season (look for our season preview March 24 or 25) so let's take a look back.
As is the case every summer, we sit down and peek ahead to the next season. We pick four teams we feel have a shot at going far in the next year's postseason. The selections have nothing to do with the regular season and everything to do with the district and state playoffs.
That said, here are two links to who we pegged last summer as teams to watch for this year.

Wrestling all-stars coming soon
This year, The Sentinel will offer both first- and second-team All-Sentinel wrestlers.
The teams have been selected and we're currently finalizing everything for the final, end-of-the-season package that will run, at the latest, in early April.
Not one area wrestlers finished with a state championship, so that made picking a Wrestler of the Year extremely difficult. There were three solid choices and each one had a resume strong enough to be honored as the best wrestler in the area.
In the end, we made a final, difficult decision. Who is it? You'll have to wait to find out but hopefully it'll be worth your wait.
Also, the baseball preseason page will be published either March 24 or 25. A special thanks go out to all the area coaches for promptly getting back to me with their information.
The days between the end of the wrestling and the beginning of baseball are the most hectic of my year, so I sincerely appreciate everyone's help.

L-L League shakeup
Big news came out of the Lancaster-Lebanon League over the weekend.
Lancaster Catholic, a perennial player in both the District 3 and PIAA Class AA playoffs, will move from Section III of the L-L to the big-school Section I starting in the 2012 season.
The Crusaders, who open the 2011 season at Trinity, will also move up to Class AAA.
How Lancaster Catholic was allowed to jump two sections can be confusing situation to explain, so we recommend reading the story from Lancaster Newspapers.
One year after reaching the PIAA Class AA semifinals in 2008, the Crusaders won the state. Lancaster Catholic also won 3-AA gold in 1982, 1983, 2005, 2008 and 2009.
The top-seeded and unbeaten Crusaders were bounced from the 3-AA playoffs in November by Wyomissing in the semifinals.

Signing off from Giant Center
Well that nearly puts a bow on the 2010-11 high school wrestling season.
The area did not produce a state champion in either classification but there were six placewinners, including one silver medalist and two bronze medalists.
Over the next week or two, we'll put together and release the All-Sentinel wrestling team and decide who is the Wrestler of the Year. To be honest, that's a difficult decision to make this year since we had one runner-up in Class AA and two third-place finishers in Class AAA. An argument can be made for all three.
Once that's done, we'll roll right into the high school baseball season. In fact, expect the first post about baseball early next week. Spring practice began March 7 and the first day of games is March 25. So stay tuned.
Again, thanks for visiting both Inside the Red Zone and cumberlink.com over the last few weeks to follow the area wrestlers. The amount of visits the blog received from area wrestling fans was outstanding.

PIAA Wrestling: A look back
Carlisle senior Jayshon Wilson has one last shot to accomplish something that no other wrestler in school has done.
With two wins today, Wilson (38-2) will become Carlisle's first state wrestling champion.
Carlisle does have 10 state placewinners -- Wilson owns three of them and is already guaranteed to place this year -- but none has finished higher than third.
Think about that: Carlisle has never had a wrestler in a state championship.
With a win over undefeated Central Mountain junior Brian Brill (42-0) in Saturday morning's semifinals, Wilson, already the school's all-time wins leader, will make more history before he graduates.
The other area wrestler alive for a Class AAA gold medal is East Pennsboro senior 215-pounder Zach Nye.
East Penn boasts only eight state placewinners in its history but, thanks to Mike Euker, does have a state title. Euker won the 1978 unlimted weight class.
Nye (37-0) finished second at 215 last year and, if he beats Methacton senior Brandon Clark (43-3) today, will be the third wrestler to appear in a state final for East Penn and the first to wrestler in two state title bouts.
The other finalist was Terry DeStito, who finished second at 154 in 1971.

Boiling Springs has three past state wrestling champions.
Here's the list that junior 103-pounder Joseph Byers hopes to join Saturday afternoon at Hershey's Giant Center when he battles Kittanning freshman Jason Nolf at 2:30 p.m.
1962: Joe Eremus at 145

PIAA Wrestling: The Class AA list
Busy day for Class AA
To call this a long day would be an understatement.
Those Class AA wrestlers lucky enough to be alive on the second day of the PIAA Championships have their work cut out for them today, especially if they fall into the consolation bracket.
There are five sessions of wrestling today and tonight for the Class AA guys. The worst-case scenario is a loss in the 8 a.m. quarterfinal round. Those wrestlers have a quick turnaround and wrestle again in the 9:45 a.m. consolation second round.
Win there and it's off to the 6:30 p.m. consolation quarterfinals and another win sends the wrestler into the 9 p.m. consolation semifinals against a championship semifinal loser.
And, by the way, Class AAA also wrestles today at 1 p.m. (quarterfinals) and 2:45 p.m. (consolation second round).
The big-school wrestlers have a lengthy Saturday but it's nothing like what these Class AA guys have today.

Football: Red Land still searching
A rumor came out of the Lancaster-Lebanon League late last month that Red Land settled on Lebanon coach Gerry Yonchiuk to replace Frank Gay, who resigned in January and recently accepted the head coaching job at Camp Hill.
This morning, Red Land athletic director Robert Ackell confirmed via e-mail that the search for a new head football coach "hit a dead end."
So it looks like the Lewisberry school is back to the drawing board -- but it isn't alone. East Shore schools Harrisburg and Steelton-Highspire are also looking to fill vacancies.
Red Land, a Class AAA school that is a member of the Mid-Penn Keystone Division, went 2-8 last year and hasn't enjoyed a winning season since 2008.

Football: One bad situation
If you're a follower of Carlisle football and think the Thundering Herd is going through some lean years, check out this story from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Butler, a member of PIAA District 7, has hired its second coach in as many years and fifth since 2000.
This might be one of the more challenging programs to turn around in Pennsylvania but the Golden Tornado picked a good man to tackle it: Clyde Conti, who is in the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame and experienced great success at both Clarion-Limestone and Slippery Rock high schools.
The difference between Butler and Carlisle is that the former is the largest school in District 7. There's no excuse for this program to be in such shambles and for the team to get run over on a weekly basis every single year.
At the very least, Carlisle has an excuse for struggling in the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division: it's a small Class AAAA school playing giants like Chambersburg, Cumberland Valley, Harrisburg and State College.
Butler, which had 74 players on the roster last year, according to the article, can't complain about numbers or lack of depth.
It's absolutely amazing to us that a school of this size can be so bad at football year after year. Remember, there's nothing more important in District 7 than football. It's one of the stronger districts in the state, if not the nation, every fall but for some reason, the passion is non-existent in the halls of Butler Area Senior High School.

Southeast Region a tough one
While working on the preview story for this weekend's PIAA Class AA Southeast Region, we unearthed some interesting facts.
From what we can tell, not one of the 11 area wrestlers who qualified for the regional will have an easy path to Giant Center for the PIAA Class AA Championships the following weekend.
Making the trip to Wilson High School in suburban Reading will be seven returning champions and 13 returning state placewinners.
Of the wrestlers who qualified through the Southeast Region last year, 29 ended up placing at the state tournament and three others won state gold.
That's pretty good for a regional comprised of small schools that hail from traditional big-school districts. Teams in the field Friday and Saturday include wrestlers from districts 1, 3, 11 and 12.
Those are districts full of big schools, but what they showed last year was that there's also some pretty good wrestlers at those little schools.

189: Ian Gimber, Saucon Valley (189)
